Adkins was brought up by a single young mother in various working-class neighborhoods of London. Adkins loved listening to modern pop music in her early years and began to learn to play the clarinet, as well as the guitar. It wasn't until she was in her teens when she was introduced to Etta James, a r&b singerand other musicians in the late 20th century and she began to consider about a career in the field of music. She was attending an institution for secondary education in the performing and visual arts that was funded by the federal government. A friend of mine posted songs Adkins had written on Myspace. She was soon discovered by record labels and was signed to a deal with XL Recordings in 2006.
